My partner and I have been finding it difficult as to how to structure the piece. We were sure we wanted to convey the challenges associated with depression, but we honesty didn't know where to start.
We agreed on the "day-in-a-life method," but we didn't know if people would generally understand what we were trying to convey. Our main character would mostly be alone throughout these scenes so the dialogue would be minimal. We discussed using a voice over of his thoughts, but it seemed like a forced method. We wanted a natural feeling to the piece which we could not come to terms with.
We attempted to look over the idea of better conveying it through the visual aspects of the production, but we worried the quality of understanding would be largely diminished as the general public would not understand things the way we would as we deal with our own mental health issues.
The fact that we understand the topic and difficulties much better than the general population also gave us a disadvantage we didn't think through very much. That's why when our teacher, Mrs.Stoklosa, sat us down for our individual meeting we had a lot to go through.
She helped us construct a new method of showing the struggles of depression through the day in our main character's life and with an explanation. The idea of having the character go over his day while under the guiding questions and dialogue from a psychologist was near perfect.
We would create "flashbacks" into the main character's day through conversation with the psychologist. The issue we faced then was that we wanted the main character to speak nearly minimally or have trouble explaining said events despite being an average day. Our teacher then gave us the idea of having him sketch out the day and going into the flashbacks through those. We would lay the dialogue of the psychologist as a voice over throughout these flashbacks. The confusion of his day would be pushed with how he can't put his doodles in order or explain them very well if at all. In this case the psychologist's dialogue will guide along with the visual to explain what went on and how the main character was feeling at the time.
Now that we have a plan we are definitely calmer. Still worried about actual planning and scheduling, but we are getting there finally.
